As META (Facebook’s parent company) announced in 2022, getting paid from Facebook Reels is now available in 150 countries worldwide. This includes users from more than 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa e.g., Cameroon, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda, Seychelles, Senegal, Kenya, Cape Verde, Guinea, etc. Previously available only in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and India after launching in 2021, the Reels Play on Facebook bonus program pays eligible creators for hitting certain simple milestones while using their creative and monetization tools. So millions of Africans can now earn from facebook reels and here’s all you need to know!
What are Reels?
Reels are short entertaining videos (0 – 60secs) that creators post to connect with their audiences. META first launched Reels on Instagram in 2020, before introducing the Facebook version in 2021.
The Reels feature on Facebook offers a set of custom tools users can employ to create short interesting videos. You can import or record your short video and customize it with audio, stickers, special effects, text, and captions, and post it to share with and beyond your followers.
Creating reels is similar to making videos on Tik Tok and YouTube shorts. They all provide identical tools that allow you to create interesting short videos as the trend of global interest in short video content continues to rise. Even META’s Regional Director for sub-Saharan Africa, Nunu Ntshingila, said after the launch that it was in response to people preferring to consume videos.

She also said, “we’ve seen that video now accounts for almost all of the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram, and Reels is our fastest-growing content format by far.”
The competition from other Social Media platforms, especially TIK TOK, has kept Meta working on making it easier for their users to share Reels to audiences on both Facebook and Instagram using cross-posting.
Some interesting eligibility features to monetize your Facebook Reels;
- Your account must be more than 30 days old.
- Turn ON professional mode (similar to other platforms)
- You only need 1 follower (For Tik Tok you need at least 10,000 followers, and 1,000 subscribers on YouTube)
- Post at least 5 reels in the last 30 days with ~100,000 combined views (only needed 1,000 views upon launch)
- Reels must be original videos (no watermarks from other social platforms)
- Join mostly by invite once you qualify.
Create and earn!
Facebook is still the world’s most popular social media platform with over 2.93 billion active users as of 2022 and META is providing so many opportunities for creators to earn from Facebook Reels.
Meta’s Reels Play Bonus program is part of their $ 1 billion investment from which eligible creators can earn up to $35,000 monthly based on how their reels perform.
As highlighted by Nunu Ntshingila, they are focusing on making reels the best way for creators to connect with their followers while making money from creating good quality content.
Using more attractive offers to incentive content creators is a route not only Facebook is taking. Twitter recently introduced Tip Jar which creators and users can use to send and receive money via numerous payment platforms or services.
How do Facebook Reels work?
Any user on Facebook can create a reel and share it with their friends and family or become a global stage creator. Available only on mobile, you can create a reel from the prompt on the top of your Feed or while viewing others’ reels, tap create and capture something new or pick video clips from your gallery and edit before posting.
The reels feature on Facebook is constantly getting new updates to make it even easier to design and share the best possible short videos for your followers.
